Flu 2021

There are 4 groups of patients that will be eligible for the flu vaccination this year, and you will receive your invitation by text (if we have a mobile number on your record), or by letter if we don’t.

The timing of vaccinations for each group is dependent on the delivery date of the vaccination type that is specific to that group – as there is a different type for a different age group.

Group 1 – 65 and over (or will be 65 by 31st March 2022)

As a result of the national delivery problem with the flu supplier getting the vaccinations to us, as you will likely have read about in the national news, we have no alternative but to cancel our originally planned dates and rearrange them.

We will still be running two mass vaccination days, and they will still be at St Andrews Church Hall on Kimbolton Road, Bedford, MK40 2PF.

We will continue to follow the infection control and prevention guidance for healthcare settings, which asks all patients to wear a face covering and maintain social distancing.

If you cannot wear a mask or are exempt, we ask that you wear a visor – and will have a supply at the hall that we can give you on the day if you don’t have your own.

But you will not be able to come into the hall unless you have a face covering in place, in order that we continue to protect other patients and staff.

Day one is now on 6th October, and we will have 4 sessions:

  • 9:00 to 11:00, surnames A to B
  • 11:00 to 13:00, surnames C to D
  • 1:00 to 15:00, surnames E to G
  • 15:00 to 17:00, surnames H to J

Day two is now on 13th October, and will also have 4 sessions:

  • 9:00 to 11:00, surnames K to M
  • 11:00 to 13:00, surnames N to R
  • 31:00 to 15:00, surnames S to T
  • 15:00 to 17:00, surnames U to Z

Ideally please try to stick to your allocated session day, and timing, so that we can safely manage patient numbers during that time.

But if you cannot make your allocated time slot or day, please still come along on either of the two dates.

In the event that you are not able to attend these dates, we will arrange ‘catch up’ clinics at the practice, but these will only be scheduled after the two days have been completed.

Group 2 – under 65 at risk

We will be running one mass vaccination day at the practice, we have not yet set the date for this as it depends very much on the vaccine delivery dates.

We will send out invitations once we have clarity on this.

Group 3 – 50-64 not at risk

It is unlikely that we will be vaccinating this group at the practice, and instead encourage you to go to your local pharmacy to get vaccinated.

Unfortunately at the time of year, we had to order our vaccinations (January), NHS England had not decided that this group were going to be eligible, and so we had not placed an order to have sufficient vaccines to be able to vaccinate this group.

We are sorry that we cannot provide this service for you, and hope that with more notice from NHS England about eligibility that we will be able to provide this in future years.

Group 4 – 2 and 3 year olds

The invitations for this group are managed centrally by Child Health, and will only be sent out once we know when we are able to order nasal flu supplies from the national ordering system.

Historically this has been a little later in the year, usually late October. But once we know we can order vaccines and have delivery dates confirmed, then we will be able to schedule clinics.

As in previous years, we would like to schedule some clinics on a Saturday to make this easier for parents to attend, and will also schedule clinics during the week.
